Hi, my name is Daniel Freedman. Welcome to Accelerate Your Career.
When I first started managing – I had no experience, training, or mentors. There were a host of new issues presented to me: coaching poor work performance, leading former peers, and dealing with conflict and difficult personalities. As a result, I was afraid of making mistakes, seeming incompetent, and not being able to lead a team successfully. In short, I felt underprepared and overwhelmed.
I wondered – what distinguishes a great leader from a bad boss? So, I paid more attention to other leaders around me. I saw lousy bosses micromanaging, ignoring issues, and not communicating with their subordinates. On the other hand, admired leaders were motivating others, upholding standards, and valuing their employees and their input.
I took the good ones on as mentors. I learned from what they were doing and asked questions when I didn’t understand – these became strong, lasting relationships. Over time, I developed principles for leadership: building respect and influence with peers, subordinates, and superiors, holding myself responsible for the success of myself and the team, and understanding the mission and strategy.
My career accelerated
My teams responded well. I gained the respect of higher-ups, and soon was climbing the ladder.
It wasn’t easy – I had to face my fear of conflict, my fear of failure, and the habit of blaming others and learn to overcome these.
My goal was to become a leader but not to be just a leader, but to be someone who motivates others and gives them the tools to succeed.
Emulating the best around me and developing internal principles to leadership has accelerated my career. Now, I help other ambitious associates accelerate theirs by providing them with those same principles, accountability, and mentorship.
I started with no experience, no training, and no mentors – over time, through persistence and failure, I have gained all three.
Skip those headaches.
